I have a "Cobra Micro Mill", which is a branded example of the
small Sieg X1 milling machines. The standard table when mine was
bought is only 240mm long. This is fine for small jobs, but
space can be a bit tight when I use my large machine vice (large
for this machine!) or my 6" rotary table (which just fits and no
more). Sieg now ship the X1 with a 400mm long table, and this table
is also available as an after-market add-on.
I bought the table and metric leadscrew from Arc Euro Trade for £38
and £18.50 respectively. Delivery was free and prompt.
As delivered.
The table and leadscrew were coated in the usual red grease to
prevent corrosion, and wrapped in plastic.
Cleaned.
Here they are after being cleaned. The mark on the table that looks
like a scratch is actually just a scuff - the camera's flash has
picked it out and exagerrated it. There's no hint of damage when a
finger is run across it.
Table profile.
Here's the profile of the end of the table. The two round holes
take the fixing screws for the cheek block. You can see that the
dovetails have a square groove machined into their inside edge.
This ensures that only the faces of the dovetails bear against
each other.
Tables compared.
The old and new tables side by side. They have the same depth,
but the new one is almost twice as long.
Before and after.
The mill shown fitted with each table. Everything is a little
stiff at present, but seems to be working okay. Adjusting the
gib was no problem and the other bits seemed to fit okay.
